Autonomous Robotic Materials | Design and development of climate-adaptive robotic structures through bio-based actuation in mechanical metamaterials
ITECH 2020-2021 | Master Thesis Project with Francesca Maisto and Lena Strobel

This project explores climate-adaptive robotic structures using bio-based actuation in mechanical metamaterials. Unlike energy-dependent systems, these passive machines respond to moisture changes. A hygroscopic robotic metamaterial, combining wood veneers with a flat 3D-printed auxetic pattern, autonomously reshapes—transforming from flat surfaces into any desired form, similar to natural organisms. A computational material programming framework enables intuitive design of geometric changes, allowing for a versatile design of macro-scale structural transformations.
